The Battle of Tucapel is an extremely influencial battle in the history of Chile. The battle took place on December 25, 1553. The Chilean army was lead by the infamous soldier, Lautaro. The battle was a sneak attack, and was a massacre. When the Chileans caught the Spanish army off guard, hope for the Spaniards was minimal. The Spanish army tried to fight back, but were very unsucessful. The Spanish fatalities were raising at an alarming rate, so the governor of the time, Pedro de Valdivia, made a very risky move. He threw himself into battle. This was a huge mistake. He was unprotected and easily killed. Although the Chileans won the battle, the Spanish were not going down without a fight. They remained in Chile, and formed stricter laws. Anyone who rebeled against the government was put immediately into slavery. No other forms of outbreak occured until the Chilean War for Independence in 1810.
